Fischer's Lovebird (Agapornis fischeri) is native to a small area of northern Tanzania south of Lake Victoria, and is one of the three white-eye-ringed lovebirds. At 42 to 58 grams it is tiny, but it is not a delicate bird: lovebirds are among the boldest small parrots kept, and a Fischer's will readily square up to a cockatiel or a hand it does not trust. The name causes a common misunderstanding. Lovebirds do not have to be kept in pairs to be happy, and a single hand-raised bird given real daily interaction will bond closely to its person; conversely a bonded pair will usually be devoted to each other and much less interested in people. What is not optional is company of some kind: a lovebird left alone all day with no attention and no partner becomes stressed and can start plucking. They are chatty rather than loud, with a high chittering call that carries but is far more apartment-friendly than a conure. Provide a wide cage with room to fly across, daily out-of-cage time in a safe room, and constant shreddable material such as palm leaf, soft wood and paper, since lovebirds shred obsessively and hens will tuck strips into their rump feathers to carry as nesting material. Feed a pellet base with vegetables and greens rather than an all-seed mix. The main health risks are obesity, and in hens chronic egg laying leading to calcium depletion and egg binding, so limit daylight, remove nest boxes and huts, and provide a cuttlebone. Expect ten to fifteen years.
