The Gouldian finch is one of the most beautiful birds kept in captivity — a living jewel of purple, yellow, green and red — but it is more delicate than the hardy budgie or zebra finch and suits a keeper with some finch experience. It is a strictly watch-don't-touch flock bird that must be kept with others, in a calm, draught-free spot, and above all it must be kept warm: Gouldians are notably sensitive to cold and chills, which quickly make them ill. Diet is a high-quality finch seed mix supplemented with egg food, fresh greens, and cuttlebone, with extra protein and calcium especially important during the demanding moult and breeding periods, when poor nutrition causes problems. The classic Gouldian health issue is the air-sac mite, a respiratory parasite that causes clicking, wheezing and open-mouthed breathing and needs prompt veterinary treatment; they are also prone to moult difficulties and, in hens, egg binding. Keep them warm and stress-free, feed a rich varied diet, guard against air-sac mites, and keep the air clear of the non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke that harm all birds — and these living jewels will grace an aviary for six to eight years.
