Bombina orientalis comes from northeastern China, Korea, and parts of Russia, where it lives in ponds, streams, and rice paddies. Small at 4-5 cm, it is remarkably long-lived at 10-15 years and among the more active, diurnal, and social amphibians, making it an engaging and beginner-friendly semi-aquatic species best kept in groups. House a group in a half-land, half-water terrarium with a filtered shallow water section they can swim in and a land area with plants and hides, at a cool 20-25C with moderate humidity. Keep the water clean, as they spend much time in it. Feed appropriately sized crickets, worms, and other insects dusted with supplements. When threatened they perform the 'unken reflex,' arching to show their warning-coloured bellies, and their skin secretes a mild irritant, so handle sparingly with wet hands and wash afterward, keeping fingers away from your eyes. Their hardiness, activity, and long life make them a rewarding communal display.
