The Pionus is the introvert's parrot: sweet-natured, notably quiet and content to perch calmly near its people rather than demand constant drama. That easygoing temperament, along with a distinctive musky-sweet scent fanciers love, makes it one of the more manageable medium parrots for a calm home. It still needs a good cage, daily out-of-cage time, and toys and foraging to stay engaged over its 25–40 year life. One quirk to know: when startled, a Pionus may wheeze or make a raspy sound and appear to hyperventilate — this is a normal fright response, not necessarily illness. Diet should be mostly pellets and vegetables kept fairly low in fat, since Pionus are prone to obesity and to vitamin A deficiency on poor diets. The breed is particularly susceptible to fungal respiratory disease (aspergillosis), so clean, dry, well-ventilated housing matters, along with vigilance for feather plucking and obesity. Non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke are lethal to their lungs. Provide a lean diet, clean air, gentle interaction and enrichment, and a Pionus makes a peaceful, undemanding and long-lived companion.
