The red-eared slider is the classic pet turtle, but it is far more demanding than its cheap hatchling price suggests: it grows to 25–30 cm, lives twenty to forty years, and needs a very large aquarium — well over 100 litres per adult. That water must be kept clean by powerful filtration, warmed with a heater, and topped by a dry basking platform under both a heat lamp and UVB so the turtle can haul out, dry off and process calcium. Sliders are messy omnivores that eat commercial turtle pellets, leafy greens and some protein, with the balance shifting toward plants as they mature. Overfeeding and poor water quality are the root of most problems. Common illnesses are almost all husbandry failures: soft shell and metabolic bone disease from missing UVB or calcium, shell rot and respiratory infection from cold or dirty water and no proper basking, and swollen eyes from vitamin A deficiency. Because they are so often bought small and then outgrow their setups, never release a slider outdoors — they are an invasive species banned in many regions. Commit to the space, filtration and lighting, and a slider is a hardy, engaging companion for decades.
