The Ringneck Dove is a fully domesticated dove weighing 150-200 grams with a lifespan of 12-20 years, kept by humans for thousands of years. Exceptionally calm and gentle, these birds are among the most people-friendly of all avian pets, often becoming hand-tame and content to perch on a shoulder, with a gentle laughing coo that is pleasant rather than piercing. House them in a wide cage or aviary of at least 60cm width with horizontal flying room and low perches, as doves are not climbers. Feed a dove or pigeon seed mix supplemented with greens, grit, and a calcium source. Ringneck Doves are hardy and easy to care for, doing well singly with human company or in bonded pairs, though pairs breed readily. Keep the enclosure clean to prevent parasites and respiratory issues, offer bathing water, and their gentle, trusting temperament makes them ideal beginner and family birds.
