Originating in Asia and prized for centuries, the Silkie is a medium ornamental chicken weighing 0.9-1.4 kilograms with a lifespan of 7-9 years. Their hallmark fluffy plumage lacks the barbs that hold normal feathers together, giving a silky, downy coat that cannot repel water, and their famously gentle, broody, affectionate nature makes them beloved backyard and family birds. Silkies need a secure, predator-proof coop with a dry run and roosting space, plus protection from rain and cold since their fluffy feathers offer poor insulation when wet. Feed a quality poultry layer or grower feed supplemented with greens, grit, and calcium for laying hens. Their feathered feet and crest require monitoring for mites, mud, and eye irritation, so regular grooming checks are important.
