The Akita is Japan's dignified symbol of loyalty, immortalised by Hachikō — a large, powerful, quiet guardian that bonds profoundly and forever with its family. It is calm, courageous and deeply devoted, but also independent, strong-willed and naturally wary of strangers, and it often does not tolerate other dogs, especially of the same sex. This combination of size, strength and guarding instinct makes the Akita a breed strictly for experienced owners who provide early, extensive socialisation and firm but respectful, positive training. It is not an aggressive dog when well raised, but it is a serious responsibility. The thick double coat is clean and low-odour but sheds dramatically twice a year, needing frequent brushing during the seasonal 'blow'. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips and thyroid, and be aware of the breed's tendencies: hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, eye disease (progressive retinal atrophy), certain autoimmune conditions, and bloat (feed measured meals and rest after eating). Give an Akita confident, respectful leadership, thorough socialisation, exercise and lifelong devotion in return, and it will be a magnificent, intensely loyal guardian for ten to thirteen years.
