Pet insurance: what you are actually buying
Plainly, first: NetForPet does not sell, underwrite or administer insurance, and we cannot advise you on a specific policy. The companies listed here are affiliate partners — if you buy through one of our links, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. That is how a free app pays for itself, and it is why we would rather teach you to read a policy than sell you one.
What you are actually buying
Pet insurance is not a discount club or a savings plan. It is protection against the bill you cannot absorb: the swallowed sock at two in the morning, the torn cruciate ligament, years of managing a chronic disease.
Accident-only pays when something happens to the animal — a fracture, a poisoning, a bite. It is cheap because illness is the expensive part. Accident and illness, usually called comprehensive, adds the diseases: cancer, diabetes, skin and gut conditions, the long ones. Wellness add-ons prepay predictable costs like vaccinations and dental cleaning: that is budgeting, not insurance, and it rarely pays for itself.
The deductible, the co-insurance and the limit
Three numbers decide what comes back to you. The deductible — the excess, in some markets — is what you pay before the insurer pays anything, and it may reset each policy year or apply once per condition, for as long as that condition lasts. Co-insurance is the share you keep paying after that: at 80% reimbursement you pay 20% of everything, forever. The limit is the ceiling: per year, per condition, or per lifetime. A cheap premium with a low annual limit is no bargain, because the limit is exactly where a serious illness lands. Price one real example before you sign — a 4,000 surgery in your own currency, with your deductible and your rate.
Waiting periods
Cover does not start when you pay. Accidents are usually claimable within days, illness after two to four weeks, and some conditions — cruciate ligaments and hip dysplasia are the classics — carry six months or more. Anything that appears during a waiting period is not covered, and may be treated as pre-existing ever after.
Pre-existing conditions — this is the whole game
Every mainstream policy excludes pre-existing conditions: anything that showed signs before cover began, or during the waiting period, whether or not it was diagnosed and whether or not you noticed. The vague vomiting your vet wrote down last spring can be why a gut-disease claim is refused years later.
That is why the decision is time-sensitive. Insuring a young, healthy animal is the product working as designed: everything ahead of it is unknown, and unknown is what is insurable. Insuring an animal that is already ill is a different transaction — the existing problem is excluded, and you are covering only what has not happened yet. That can still be worth having; just do not expect the current problem to be paid for, because it will not be.
Lifetime versus annually-renewing
This decides what happens after your first big claim. A lifetime policy keeps paying for a chronic condition year after year while you keep renewing, the limit refreshing annually. An annually-renewing policy may cap that condition per year, or drop it from next year's contract once you have claimed — leaving you uninsured for the exact thing your animal has, and no new insurer will take it on. It is the most expensive detail in the document.
The questions to ask before you buy
Is this lifetime cover, and what happens to a chronic condition at renewal? What are the waiting periods? Is the deductible per year or per condition? Is there an upper age limit, and does the premium rise with age, with claims, or both? Are dental, behaviour, prescription diets and end-of-life care in or out? Does the insurer pay the vet directly? What is excluded for this breed?
Take the answers from the policy wording rather than a marketing page, and read the exclusions list first. Compare at least three quotes. We are not brokers and we do not know your animal: this guide is general information, not financial or veterinary advice.
