The American Flagfish (Jordanella floridae) is native to Florida and parts of the southeastern United States, living in weedy ponds, marshes and canals, and reaches about 5 to 6 cm. Males are stockier and boldly patterned in red and iridescent green; females are plainer with a dark spot on the flank. It is a pupfish rather than a typical tropical killifish. Keep a small group with more females than males in a planted tank of 75 litres or more at 18-26C with a pH of 6.5 to 8.0, tolerating a wide range of hardness. It handles cooler water well and does not require a heater in a room-temperature home. Feed a diet with a strong vegetable component, spirulina flake, blanched vegetables and algae wafers, alongside frozen daphnia and bloodworm. Its main practical use is as one of the few reliable eaters of hair and thread algae. Be honest about temperament: males are territorial and may nip long-finned tankmates, so choose robust companions.
