The Beagle is a merry, sturdy, friendly scent hound that gets on famously with children and other dogs, but you must respect what it was bred to be: a nose on legs. Once a Beagle locks onto a scent, its ears effectively switch off, so reliable recall is a lifelong training project and off-lead freedom in unfenced areas is risky. It is a pack animal that hates being alone, and a bored, lonely Beagle bays, howls and digs — so it needs company, daily exercise and scent games to stay content. The short coat is very low-maintenance with a weekly brush, though the drop ears need regular cleaning to prevent infection. The defining health issue is appetite: Beagles are relentless eaters and gain weight extremely easily, and obesity is the breed's most common problem, so measured meals and secured food are essential. Also watch for epilepsy, hypothyroidism and ear infections. Give a Beagle exercise, scent work, company and portion control, and it will be a cheerful, affectionate family companion for twelve to fifteen years.
