The Bearded Collie is an exuberant, sociable herder that stays playful well into old age. Beardies are affectionate and lively family dogs that bond closely with everyone and generally love children and other pets. They are bright and independent-minded, with a cheerful stubbornness that reflects their heritage of working sheep on their own initiative in the Scottish hills. This is an active breed that needs plenty of daily exercise and mental engagement — long walks, running, games and dog sports all suit them. Without enough activity they can become bouncy and boisterous indoors. Training should be upbeat and reward-based; Beardies are sensitive and respond poorly to harsh corrections, but they thrive on variety and fun and excel at agility and herding. The long, shaggy double coat is high-maintenance, needing thorough brushing several times a week to prevent mats, especially behind the ears and legs. The breed is generally healthy but can be prone to hip dysplasia, Addison's disease, hypothyroidism and cataracts. With exercise, company and regular grooming, the Beardie is a durable and delightful companion.
