The Border Terrier is an otter-headed working terrier that is famously more even-tempered and good-natured than most of its cousins — tough and game outdoors, affectionate and easygoing indoors. Bred to run with foxhounds and go to ground, it is hardy, friendly, eager and adaptable, getting on well with children and, unusually for a terrier, often with other dogs. It still has real terrier energy, a prey drive and a love of digging, so it needs daily exercise, mental stimulation, a secure yard and consistent positive training, but its willing, biddable nature makes it one of the easier terriers to live with. The harsh, weather-resistant double coat is low-shedding and needs weekly brushing plus hand-stripping a couple of times a year. Health-wise the Border Terrier is one of the healthier, hardier small breeds, but buy from a breeder who screens hips and hearts, and be aware of hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, heart conditions, allergies, and a breed-specific neurological condition (CECS/'Spike's disease'). Give a Border Terrier exercise, a job for its mind, secure containment and dental care, and this cheerful, good-natured little worker will be a devoted companion for twelve to fifteen years.
