The Ceylon Cat is the native street cat of Sri Lanka, brought to Italy in 1984 by the veterinarian Paolo Pellegatta, who established a breeding programme in Milan; it has been recognised in Italy since 1988 and by WCF. Its signature is a very short sand-gold coat with fine ticking, like a miniature Abyssinian, broken by dark bars on the legs and chest and rings on the tail, and it stays small, usually under five kilograms. The temperament is the reason to seek one out. Ceylons are gentle, sociable, quietly affectionate cats without the vocal intensity of the Oriental group or the restlessness of the spotted hybrids. They get on easily with children, other cats and dogs, adapt well to apartments, and are content with moderate play rather than an athletic programme. They do want company, so a working household should consider two. Care is genuinely low-effort. The single short coat needs a weekly stroke with a rubber brush; there is no undercoat to shed and no mats to fight. Because the breed comes from a naturally selected island population, there is no documented inherited disease cluster, though the founding group was small, so ask the breeder about the pedigree and about heart and kidney screening. Practical risks are the ordinary indoor ones: keep meals measured, brush teeth, and provide enough water and wet food to protect the urinary tract.
