The Dogo Argentino was bred to hunt wild boar and puma in packs, which shaped a brave, high-drive dog that is nonetheless deeply devoted and gentle with its own family. It bonds closely and does not like being left alone for long. Strong protective instincts and dog-directed intensity mean early, thorough socialization and calm leadership are non-negotiable. These are athletes that need substantial daily exercise — long walks, runs, structured play and a real outlet for their working drive. A well-exercised Dogo is calm indoors; an under-stimulated one becomes destructive and difficult. Training should be firm, fair and consistent from puppyhood, using positive methods to channel their considerable intelligence and strength. The short white coat is wash-and-go, needing only weekly brushing, but that same white pigment brings a real risk of congenital deafness, so testing is wise. Watch also for hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and sun-sensitive skin. With the right owner and a job to do, the Dogo is a magnificent, loving companion.
