The Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) ranges across the Indo-Pacific including the Red Sea and grows to about 38 to 40 cm. Juveniles are black with concentric white and blue rings, a pattern so unlike the adult that early naturalists described them separately. The change to adult banding takes roughly two years. This fish requires a very large aquarium, realistically 800 litres or more, at 24-27C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, with substantial rockwork and caves. In the wild it eats mainly sponges and tunicates, so a captive diet must include sponge-based angelfish preparations alongside algae sheets, mysis and quality pellets several times daily; a generic frozen diet leads to slow decline. Two honest warnings: it is not reef safe and will eat LPS corals, soft corals, clams and tubeworms, and adults are territorial toward other large angels. It is a centrepiece fish for a dedicated fish-only system, not a mixed reef.
