The Fat-tailed Gerbil (Pachyuromys duprasi), or duprasi, is a small, plush-furred gerbil from the northern Sahara, instantly recognised by the thick, club-shaped tail in which it stores fat and water for the desert. Slower and fluffier than a Mongolian gerbil, it weighs 30-60 g and, unusually for a small rodent, lives 5-7 years. Duprasi are famously docile and easy to tame, moving calmly and rarely biting, which makes them a lovely hands-on small pet. They are more solitary than Mongolian gerbils and are usually kept singly or in carefully introduced same-sex pairs, with plenty of space to prevent squabbling. House them in a large tank or cage with deep, dry sand-and-substrate mix for burrowing and a sand bath to keep the coat healthy. Feed a gerbil or hamster seed mix with added insect protein such as dried mealworms, plus occasional vegetables; because they store fat, avoid over-feeding rich or oily seeds to prevent obesity. A thin tail is normal in a fit animal, while a very fat one can signal too many treats; watch teeth, weight and, in older animals, tumours.
