The Japanese Spitz is a small, cheerful companion breed that is affectionate, loyal and devoted to its family, thriving on human company and disliking being left alone for long. Bright, playful and gentle, it is generally excellent with children and other pets and forms close bonds with everyone in the household. Alert and watchful, it will announce visitors but is friendly rather than aggressive, making a charming and adaptable family dog. This is a moderately active breed that enjoys daily walks and play but settles calmly indoors, suiting apartments and houses alike. Japanese Spitz are intelligent, eager to please and quick to learn, responding beautifully to positive, reward-based training; they can be a little sensitive, so gentle, upbeat handling works best. Early socialization and enough engagement prevent excessive barking, which their watchdog nature can encourage. Despite the fluffy white coat, grooming is surprisingly easy: the non-oily coat repels dirt and needs only a couple of brushings a week, with heavier seasonal shedding. The breed is generally very healthy and long-lived, with patellar luxation, epilepsy, tear-duct issues and eye conditions among the occasional concerns. Given company, exercise and affection, the Japanese Spitz is a joyful, devoted and beautiful companion.
