The Löwchen, or Little Lion Dog, appears in European art from the fifteenth century onwards, sitting on the laps of the nobility with its distinctive lion clip: a full mane over the front of the body, the hindquarters clipped close, and a tuft at the tip of the tail. The breed collapsed to fewer than seventy dogs in the 1970s and was rebuilt from that base, and it remains uncommon today. Behind the theatrical haircut is a robust and sensible little dog. Löwchen are cheerful, outgoing and playful without being frantic, affectionate with their family, sociable with strangers, other dogs and children, and adaptable to apartment or house. They are bright and enjoy training, doing well at agility and obedience, and they are notably less fragile and less yappy than many companion breeds of their size. They dislike being left alone for long days. Exercise is around thirty to forty-five minutes of walking plus play. The long single coat sheds very little but tangles, and needs brushing every day or two whether or not you keep the traditional clip; many owners choose a uniform shorter trim, which is entirely fine for a pet. Health is good for the breed's rarity: buy from a breeder who screens for patellar luxation and hip dysplasia and who eye-tests, since progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts are documented. Keep up dental care and expect a bright, easy companion for thirteen to fifteen years.
