The Maltese is an ancient toy breed of pure white silk that has charmed nobility for millennia, and it remains a devoted, spirited little companion far bolder than its two-to-four kilograms suggest. Gentle, affectionate and playful, it bonds fiercely with its person and thrives on companionship — it does not like being left alone and can develop separation anxiety, so it suits someone who wants a constant lap companion. Bright and trainable, it still needs socialisation and boundaries so its confidence doesn't tip into yappy 'small dog syndrome'. The long, flowing white coat is high-maintenance, needing daily brushing to stay tangle-free (many keep it in a short puppy cut), with careful cleaning around the eyes to manage tear staining. Being tiny, the Maltese is delicate and prone to specific issues: patellar luxation, a collapsing trachea (use a harness, not a neck collar), heart disease with age, and dental disease from a crowded little mouth, which makes brushing and dental care essential. Tiny puppies can also suffer low blood sugar. Handle it gently, protect it from falls and rough play, keep up dental care, and a Maltese will be a loving, lively companion for twelve to fifteen years.
