The Miniature American Shepherd began in California in the 1960s, when breeders selected small Australian Shepherds for size while keeping the herding ability intact. It was long called the Miniature Australian Shepherd, but was recognised by the AKC in 2015 under its current name and is now a separate breed with its own registry, not a size variety of the Aussie. It is a full herding dog in a smaller package, and that is the point people most often miss. Miniature American Shepherds are extremely intelligent, highly trainable and superb at agility, obedience and herding trials, and they need an hour or more of daily exercise plus real mental work. Without it they become anxious, barky and prone to obsessive habits. They are devoted, sensitive and attentive to their person, reserved with strangers, and they will attempt to herd children and pets by circling and nipping unless taught otherwise. The medium double coat sheds seasonally and needs brushing twice a week, more during the moult. Two health items matter specifically. Merle-to-merle breeding produces double-merle puppies with serious deafness and blindness, so never buy from a litter with two merle parents. And the breed frequently carries the MDR1 gene variant, which makes certain common drugs, including some worming and sedative medications, dangerous; a simple DNA test settles it, and every owner should tell their vet the result. Also screen hips, elbows and eyes.
