The Presa Canario, or Dogo Canario, developed on the Canary Islands as a working farm dog used to control and hold cattle and to guard property. It is a large, heavily muscled molosser with a broad head and a naturally confident, territorial temperament, recognised by the AKC Foundation Stock Service and by the FCI. This breed requires a genuinely experienced owner and a full understanding of the legal position before acquisition. The Presa is restricted or banned outright in several countries and jurisdictions, insurance can be difficult, and the responsibility that comes with a sixty-kilo guarding dog is substantial. Well bred and well raised, a Presa is calm, steady, deeply loyal and not needlessly aggressive; poorly bred or poorly socialised, it is dangerous. Extensive early socialisation, lifelong training and secure containment are not optional extras but the basic terms of ownership. Exercise needs are moderate rather than extreme, around an hour of walking and controlled activity daily plus mental work, and the short coat needs nothing beyond a weekly brush. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips and elbows and is open about the breed's rates of dysplasia, eye conditions such as entropion, and demodectic mange. As a large deep-chested dog it is at risk of bloat, so feed measured meals in a calm setting and avoid strenuous exercise around mealtimes. Lifespan is typically nine to eleven years.
