The Pug is a charming, comical little companion bred for a thousand years purely to delight people, and it excels at it: sociable, affectionate, playful and devoted, happy in a flat or a family home and wonderful with children. Its exercise needs are modest, but it loves attention and hates being left alone. It is stubborn but food-motivated, so training works best with patience and treats — carefully, because a Pug will eat anything and gains weight alarmingly fast. The short coat sheds surprisingly heavily and needs a weekly brush, plus regular cleaning of the facial wrinkles to prevent skin infection. The Pug's flat, brachycephalic face is its central health reality: it restricts breathing and makes the dog dangerously heat-intolerant, so it must be kept cool, never over-exercised in warmth, and never left in heat. Its bulging eyes are prone to injury and ulcers, and it is prone to obesity (which worsens the breathing) and to some spinal issues. Buy from a breeder who prioritises more open nostrils and airways, keep the Pug lean and cool, protect its eyes and clean its wrinkles, and it will be a joyful, loving clown for thirteen to fifteen years.
