The Puggle crosses a Pug with a Beagle and became popular in the United States in the early 2000s. The most useful thing about it is anatomical: a Puggle usually has a noticeably longer muzzle than a Pug, which meaningfully reduces, though does not eliminate, the breathing difficulty, heat intolerance and eye problems that come with an extremely flat face. For anyone drawn to the Pug's personality, this is a real welfare improvement. Temperament combines the Pug's affectionate clowning with the Beagle's curiosity and independence. Puggles are friendly, playful, good with children and generally sociable with other dogs. They also inherit Beagle traits that surprise owners: a powerful nose that makes recall unreliable, a tendency to bay and howl rather than bark, a talent for escaping fences, and a relentless appetite. Training needs patience and food-based motivation, since both parent breeds are cheerfully stubborn. The two health priorities are weight and breathing. Both parent breeds gain weight extremely easily, and obesity worsens every other problem, so measured meals and secured food bins are essential. Even with the longer muzzle, many Puggles remain partly brachycephalic, so keep the dog cool, avoid strenuous exercise in heat and never leave it in a warm car. Check and clean the drop ears and any facial folds regularly, exercise around forty-five minutes to an hour a day, and ask any breeder about breathing, eye and hip screening on both parents.
