The Tibetan Spaniel is a small, ancient companion bred to sit on monastery walls scanning the horizon and to sound the alarm at anything unusual — and it still claims the highest seat in the house 'for security purposes'. Alert, intelligent, independent and affectionate, the 'Tibbie' bonds closely with its family and is a devoted, playful little companion, though it retains a watchdog's eye and can be aloof with strangers. Its cat-like independence means training rewards gentle, patient, positive methods rather than expecting instant obedience. Its exercise needs are modest, making it a good apartment dog, but it loves to survey its domain from a windowsill or sofa back. The silky, medium-length double coat needs brushing a couple of times a week to prevent mats. Health-wise the Tibetan Spaniel is generally a hardy, long-lived breed, but buy from a breeder who screens eyes, and be aware of inherited eye disease (progressive retinal atrophy) as well as patellar luxation, cherry eye and allergies. As a small dog it also needs diligent dental care. Give a Tibetan Spaniel gentle training, exercise, a good lookout perch and close company, keep up eye and dental care, and this charming little sentinel will be a devoted companion for twelve to fifteen years.
