The Treeing Walker Coonhound — nicknamed 'the people's choice' among coonhounds — is a fast, smart, athletic American scent hound bred to trail raccoon and 'tree' it, then announce the find with a loud, operatic, carrying bark. Friendly, eager and enthusiastic, it is affectionate with its family and generally good with children and other dogs, making a fun companion for an active, outdoorsy home. But its voice and its drive define ownership: it is loud and vocal, has boundless energy, a strong prey drive and an excellent nose, so recall is unreliable once on a scent, and it needs a securely fenced yard, on-lead walks, lots of daily exercise, scent work and patient, positive, food-motivated training. An under-exercised Walker becomes restless, noisy and destructive. The short coat is very easy, needing only a weekly brush, with regular cleaning of the drop ears. Health-wise the Treeing Walker is a relatively robust, healthy breed, but buy from a reputable breeder and watch for hip dysplasia, ear infections (from those drop ears), a tendency to obesity, and dental disease. Give a Treeing Walker Coonhound serious exercise, scent work, secure containment and portion control, keep the ears clean, and this energetic, good-natured hound will be a devoted companion for twelve to thirteen years.
