The Variatus Platy (Xiphophorus variatus) comes from eastern Mexico and reaches about 5 to 7 cm, a little larger and more elongated than the common southern platy. Line-bred varieties include sunset, hi-fin and tuxedo forms. Its natural range extends into cooler upland streams, so it tolerates temperatures from about 16 to 27C and is one of the few tropical shelf fish suited to an unheated tank. A group of six or more, weighted towards females, needs 80 litres or more, pH 7.0 to 8.2 in moderately hard to hard water, with planting and open swimming room. Feed a quality flake or pellet with real vegetable content, plus frozen daphnia and brine shrimp, since it grazes algae. It is peaceful, extremely hardy and breeds constantly, releasing live young every four to six weeks, so a mixed group will produce more fish than expected and needs either plant cover for fry to survive naturally or a plan for the surplus. It is an excellent first fish and a good companion for white cloud minnows and peppered corys in a cool tank.
