The Welsh Springer Spaniel is an active, affectionate gundog that forms strong bonds and is deeply devoted to its family. It tends to be more reserved with strangers than the English Springer, making it alert and watchful, but it is friendly and gentle with people it knows and usually good with children and other dogs. Welshies dislike being left alone and want to be part of family life. Bred to work all day, this is an energetic breed that needs plenty of daily exercise — long walks, running, fetch, swimming and field work all suit it. Bored or under-exercised Welsh Springers can become restless and vocal. They are intelligent and eager to please but can be sensitive and a touch stubborn, so keep training positive, consistent and rewarding, starting with early socialization. The medium, weatherproof coat needs brushing a couple of times a week, with extra care for the feathered ears, legs and belly, and the ears kept clean and dry. The breed is generally healthy and hardy, with hip dysplasia, ear infections, epilepsy and eye conditions among the concerns. Given exercise and companionship, the Welsh Springer is a robust, loving companion.
