The ball python is the calmest and most popular pet snake, a shy, slow constrictor that curls into a defensive ball rather than striking, and it can live thirty years or more — a real long-term commitment. It needs a secure, escape-proof enclosure (they are surprisingly strong at nosing open lids), a warm gradient with a basking area around 31–32°C and a cool end near 25°C, snug hides at both ends, and humidity of roughly 55–60%, raised during shedding. Feeding is simple: an appropriately sized rodent, ideally frozen-thawed, every one to two weeks. Ball pythons are famous fasters and may refuse food for weeks or even months, especially in winter or when stressed — usually nothing to worry about in a healthy-weight snake, but a reason to track its weight rather than panic. The main husbandry-driven illnesses are respiratory infections from enclosures that are too cold or damp, and scale rot or blister disease from substrate that is too wet or dirty, so aim for clean, correctly humid, correctly warm conditions. Watch for stuck shed and mites, handle regularly but not during a shed or for a couple of days after feeding, and a ball python is a smooth, undemanding companion for decades.
