The Black and Tan Coonhound is a classic American night-trailing scent hound, bred to follow raccoon and larger game by scent for hours and announce a treed quarry with a deep, bawling, carrying bark. That voice is the first thing to know: it is loud and used freely, so it suits rural or tolerant settings rather than close quarters. Friendly, patient and easygoing off the trail, it is a mellow, affectionate 'porch philosopher' at home and good with children, but it is a working hound at heart — driven by its nose, sometimes stubborn, with unreliable recall once on a scent, so it needs a securely fenced yard, on-lead walks, daily exercise and patient, food-motivated, positive training. The short coat is very easy, needing only a weekly brush, but the long drop ears need regular cleaning to prevent infection. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips, and be aware of hip dysplasia, ear infections, bloat (feed measured meals and rest after eating), and a strong tendency to obesity, so watch the diet.
