The Boykin Spaniel was developed in early twentieth-century South Carolina, where hunters needed a retriever small enough to ride in a section boat through the Wateree River swamps but tough enough to work all day. The result is a compact, rich brown spaniel that is now the state dog of South Carolina and one of the most cheerful and sociable gundogs in existence. Energy is the headline. Boykins are high-drive dogs that need serious daily activity, ideally including swimming and retrieving, and they are not suited to a sedentary household or long hours alone. They are exceptionally people-oriented and friendly with everyone, including strangers and children, which makes them poor guard dogs and excellent family dogs. They are quick learners and respond well to reward-based training, but a bored Boykin will chew and dig. The wavy coat needs brushing once or twice a week and light trimming, and the long drop ears must be dried and checked after every swim to prevent the ear infections that are the breed's most frequent problem. Health screening matters here: the breed has a well-documented rate of hip dysplasia, and responsible breeders screen hips, eyes and hearts and DNA-test for exercise-induced collapse and for the eye disease that runs in some lines. Keep the dog lean, keep it working, and it will be a bright companion for twelve to fifteen years.
