The Central Asian Shepherd, known across its homeland as the Alabai, is one of the oldest working dog types in the world, shaped by thousands of years of use guarding flocks against wolves across the steppe and desert of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and neighbouring regions. It was selected for independence, not obedience: a guardian working out of sight of its shepherd had to judge a threat and act alone. That history defines what it is to live with. This is not a dog for a suburban family or a first-time owner. A Central Asian is calm and low-energy indoors, but it is territorial by design, extremely large, and disposed to challenge unfamiliar dogs and to control access to its property. It needs an owner who is confident and consistent, thorough lifelong socialisation, and above all secure high fencing and careful management of visitors. It is generally devoted and gentle with its own family, including children, but its size alone requires supervision. Exercise needs are surprisingly modest, walks and space rather than sport, but the dog must have room. The thick double coat sheds heavily twice a year and needs brushing through the moult. It is a hardy, long-lived breed for its size, often reaching fourteen or fifteen, but buy from a breeder who screens hips and elbows, and take the ordinary giant-breed precautions: measured meals to reduce bloat risk, controlled growth in puppyhood, and a lean adult weight to protect the joints.
