The English Mastiff is one of the heaviest dogs on Earth, yet a calm, gentle, dignified marshmallow with its family — it guards by sheer presence rather than aggression, and a well-raised Mastiff is famously placid and devoted. Despite the size it is low-energy as an adult, needing only moderate daily walks; but early socialisation and gentle, consistent training are essential while it is still a manageable size, because you cannot muscle a hundred-kilogram dog into behaving. Puppies must not be over-exercised while their huge frames grow. The short coat is easy, but expect drool, and clean the facial folds regularly. Giant breeds carry the hard trade-offs of their size: a short lifespan of six to ten years, and serious health risks. The most urgent is bloat and gastric torsion, a life-threatening emergency, so feed measured meals from a raised bowl, rest after eating, and consider preventive stomach-tacking. Also screen for hip and elbow dysplasia and heart disease, and guard strictly against obesity, which their joints cannot bear. Feed a proper large-breed diet, keep it lean, know the signs of bloat, and an English Mastiff will be a gentle, protective companion for its short, precious life.
