The English Toy Spaniel, known in Britain as the King Charles Spaniel, is the older of the two toy spaniel breeds and the ancestor of the Cavalier. The two are easy to tell apart: the English Toy Spaniel has a domed skull and a very short upturned nose, while the Cavalier retains a longer muzzle and flatter head. It was the lap dog of the English court from the seventeenth century onward. The temperament is gentle and undemanding. These are quiet, affectionate, dignified little dogs that bond closely to one or two people, ask for modest exercise of twenty to thirty minutes a day, and are content to spend most of it on a lap or a cushion. They are sensitive to noise and rough handling and do best in a calm home; they are typically reserved rather than outgoing with strangers. The short face is the central care issue. This is a brachycephalic breed, which means restricted airways, snoring, real heat intolerance and difficulty with strenuous exercise; keep the dog cool, never over-exert it in warmth, and choose a breeder who prioritises open nostrils and a functional airway over an extreme face. The large prominent eyes are vulnerable to injury and dryness. Cardiac disease matters too: mitral valve disease is common in the toy spaniels, so ask about heart-tested parents and have a vet listen annually. The long silky coat needs brushing every other day and the ears kept clean.
