The Finnish Spitz is Finland's fox-red national treasure — a beautiful, alert spitz historically used as a 'barking bird dog' that finds game and signals the hunter with a rapid, yodelling bark. That vocal heritage is the single most important thing to know: the Finnish Spitz is one of the most talkative of all breeds and will provide running commentary on everything, so it is a genuine consideration for anyone with close neighbours, and early training to manage barking is essential. Lively, friendly and devoted to its family but independent and reserved with strangers, it needs daily exercise, mental stimulation, and patient, positive training that respects its independent, spitz nature. The plush red double coat is clean and low-odour but sheds heavily and 'blows' seasonally, needing weekly brushing and more during moults. Health-wise the Finnish Spitz is generally a hardy, healthy breed, but buy from a breeder who screens hips and eyes, and be aware of hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, epilepsy and cataracts. Give a Finnish Spitz exercise, mental engagement, patient training, barking management and family company, and this handsome, spirited 'barking bird dog' will be a devoted companion for thirteen to fifteen years.
