The German Shorthaired Pointer is a superb, versatile hunting athlete with almost boundless energy, and that is the single most important thing to understand before getting one. This is not a dog for a sedentary home: it needs vigorous daily exercise — running, swimming, fetch, dog sports — plus mental challenges, and without that outlet it becomes destructive, anxious and hard to live with. Give it the activity it craves and you get an affectionate, endlessly loyal 'velcro dog' that wants to be at your side and involved in everything. The short coat is very easy, needing only a weekly brush, though the drop ears should be checked and cleaned regularly. Health-wise it is a generally robust breed, but buy from a breeder who screens hips, and be aware of bloat (feed measured meals and rest after eating), the bleeding disorder von Willebrand disease, and ear infections. Keep a GSP genuinely well-exercised and mentally engaged, feed it well, and it will be a devoted, high-octane companion for ten to twelve years — best matched to an active, outdoorsy owner.
