The Kanaani was developed in Jerusalem from the mid-1990s by the breeder Doris Polaczek, with the explicit aim of recreating the look of the African wildcat, Felis lybica, the ancestor of every domestic cat. Early generations used wildcat crosses; the breed has been closed to them since 2000, and today's Kanaani is a domestic cat recognised by WCF. It is one of very few cat breeds with Israeli origins. The temperament reflects the design brief. Kanaanis are athletic, independent and intensely curious, more interested in patrolling and hunting than in laps. They climb high, open things, and need a home that gives them height, secure outdoor access or a catio, and daily hunting-style play with wand toys. They bond genuinely with their people but on their own terms, and they suit an experienced owner rather than someone wanting a placid lap cat. The short spotted coat is wash-and-go and needs only an occasional brush. There is no documented breed-specific disease cluster, though the gene pool is small, so ask any breeder about the health history of the line and about heart screening. Because these cats are so active, the ordinary indoor risks apply in reverse: they rarely become obese if properly exercised, but they do get into trouble, so secure your windows and balconies before the cat arrives.
