The Komondor is the famous corded 'mop dog', a giant Hungarian livestock guardian whose white cords once camouflaged it among the sheep it protected from wolves. This is a serious, ancient guardian breed — calm and devoted to its family but independent, territorial and naturally suspicious of strangers — and it is strictly for experienced owners who understand livestock-guardian dogs. It makes its own decisions, is not an obedience dog, and needs early, extensive socialisation, secure fencing and confident, respectful, positive training; without that it can be dangerously over-protective. It has moderate exercise needs but a strong guarding instinct, including barking and patrolling. The extraordinary corded coat is a major, specialised commitment: the cords must be separated by hand as they form and kept clean and dry — never brushed — and drying after a bath takes a very long time. As a giant breed the Komondor has a moderate lifespan of ten to twelve years and real risks: buy from a breeder who screens hips, guard against bloat with measured meals and rest after eating, and watch for entropion (eyelid problems) and skin issues under the coat. Give a Komondor experienced handling, socialisation, secure space and specialised coat care, and this ancient guardian will be a devoted protector for ten to twelve years.
