The Lykoi — the 'werewolf cat' — gets its haunting patchy, roan look from a natural mutation found in ordinary domestic shorthairs, which leaves parts of the coat sparse or bald and gives it a distinctly lupine appearance. Behind the wild looks is a friendly, loyal and intensely playful cat with an unusually strong, hound-like prey drive: Lykoi love to stalk and chase, often 'hunt' toys together, and bond with their families much like a devoted dog, while staying somewhat cautious with strangers. The unusual coat needs Sphynx-style care rather than brushing: because there is little fur to absorb skin oils, Lykoi periodically shed to near-baldness, build up oil and ear wax, and benefit from occasional baths, regular ear cleaning and warm indoor spots since the sparse coat offers little insulation. As a young, still-developing breed, its long-term health is being studied, but it appears generally hardy; follow the standard feline program of a good diet, dental care, parasite control and yearly check-ups, watch skin and ear health closely, and buy from a breeder working responsibly with the natural gene.
