The Oriental Longhair is the semi-longhaired Oriental, accepted in CFA championship class and sharing the Siamese family's dramatic build: a long tubular body, a wedge head and ears that look a size too big. It is the most demanding personality in this file. Orientals are loud, opinionated and utterly people-bonded; they hold conversations, follow you between rooms, open cupboards and sulk visibly when ignored. They should never be left alone all day, and they do far better in pairs. Despite the length, the coat is a single one with no woolly undercoat, so it lies flat and rarely mats: a weekly comb is genuinely enough. The real daily work is mental. Give this cat tall climbing space, puzzle feeders, clicker training and a second cat, and you avoid the destructive boredom that Orientals fall into. The Siamese-family health profile applies. Buy from a breeder who screens for progressive retinal atrophy and heart disease, and be aware of amyloidosis affecting the liver and kidneys in some lines. Oriental cats are also notably prone to early periodontal disease, so start tooth brushing while the cat is young and keep annual dental checks.
