The Samoyed is the smiling white 'cloud' of Siberia, bred to herd reindeer, pull sleds and sleep among its people for warmth — and it remains an intensely social, friendly, family-oriented dog that adores everyone and cannot bear to be left alone. Bonded so closely to its family, a lonely Samoyed becomes anxious, destructive and very vocal; this is a talkative breed that considers silence a wasted opportunity. Energetic and playful, it needs plenty of daily exercise and mental engagement, and it does far better in cool climates than in heat. The thick, glorious white double coat is the big commitment: it sheds heavily and needs brushing several times a week, daily during the seasonal 'blow', to prevent matting. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips and eyes, and be aware of the breed's tendencies: hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, heart conditions and a breed-specific inherited kidney disease (Samoyed hereditary glomerulopathy). Give a Samoyed exercise, grooming, constant company and a cool environment, and this cheerful, beautiful cloud will be a devoted family companion for twelve to fourteen years.
