The savannah monitor inhabits the grasslands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, reaching 90-130 cm and living 10-15 years, though poor diet and obesity often cut lives short in captivity. It is a robust, burrowing carnivore built for digging and gorging on invertebrates in the wild. Calmer than many monitors, it still demands space, strong heat, and disciplined feeding. Adults need a large, secure enclosure of at least 240x120 cm with a deep substrate for burrowing, sturdy hides, and a water tub. Provide a very hot basking spot of 45-55 C over a solid surface, a strong UVB source, and moderate humidity around 60% within the burrow zone. Feed a lean, insect-based carnivorous diet of gut-loaded roaches, crickets, and worms with limited whole prey; avoid fatty foods like cat food that cause the obesity so common in this species. Regular handling helps maintain a manageable temperament.
