The Scottish Straight is the straight-eared sibling of the Scottish Fold — a kitten from Fold breeding that did not inherit the ear-folding gene. That single genetic difference matters enormously: because it lacks the folding mutation, the Scottish Straight does not carry the painful cartilage-and-joint disease that affects Folds, making it the healthier way to enjoy the same round-faced, sweet-natured cat. Indeed, responsible breeders rely on Straights as the essential outcross partner for Folds. In temperament it is calm, gentle, quiet and adaptable — an easygoing companion that fits happily into quiet apartments and family homes, tolerates being alone during the workday reasonably well, and enjoys undemanding affection and gentle play. The plush, dense coat needs a weekly brush, more during seasonal sheds. Health-wise, without the cartilage issue, the main concerns are the ones it shares with its British and Persian ancestry: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease, both of which good breeders screen for, plus a tendency to gain weight. Keep it lean, maintain dental care, provide plenty of water, and keep up routine heart and kidney monitoring.
