The German Spitz is among the oldest dog types in central Europe and is the ancestor of the Pomeranian, the Keeshond and several related spitzes. It exists in several sizes; the Mittelspitz described here sits between the tiny Pomeranian and the larger Keeshond, at roughly seven to eleven kilograms. All share the same construction: a dense standing-off double coat, a large ruff, a foxy face and a tail curled over the back. This was always a farm and barge watchdog rather than a hunter, and its temperament reflects that. German Spitzes are lively, attentive, devoted to their people and highly alert, and they bark readily at anything approaching. That vigilance is the breed's most important practical trait: barking can be moderated with early, consistent training and management, but it will not be eliminated, and prospective owners in flats should factor it in. They are affectionate and playful, adapt well to smaller homes, and are typically long-lived. Exercise needs are modest, thirty to sixty minutes daily plus play and training. The coat looks like hard work but is not: it needs a thorough brush once or twice a week, and it should never be clipped, since clipping can permanently damage the double coat's regrowth. The health picture is that of a small spitz: buy from a breeder who screens for patellar luxation and eye disease, keep up daily dental care, use a harness to protect the trachea, and be alert to alopecia X, a coat-loss condition seen in spitz breeds.
