The Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, bred since the 1990s and now among the most commonly owned dogs in North America, Britain and Australia. It comes in standard, medium and miniature sizes depending on the Poodle parent, and in F1, F1b and multigenerational crosses, which affect how curly and how low-shedding the coat is. The temperament is the reason for the popularity and it is usually excellent: friendly, sociable, playful, highly trainable and good with children and other dogs, combining the Golden's warmth with the Poodle's intelligence. Because it is a cross rather than a standardised breed, individual dogs vary more than purebred puppies do, so meet both parents where possible. It needs an hour or more of daily exercise and real mental work, and it does not tolerate being left alone all day; separation anxiety is common in the type. The most frequent surprise for owners is the coat. Low-shedding does not mean low-maintenance: the wavy or curly coat grows continuously and mats rapidly, requiring thorough brushing several times a week down to the skin and professional grooming every six to eight weeks. Neglected doodle coats mat so badly that a full shave becomes the only humane option. The claim that the cross is hypoallergenic is not reliable, since coat type varies. Health-wise, ask the breeder for hip, elbow, heart and eye clearances on both parents and a DNA panel; the parent breeds contribute hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, ear infections and, from the Golden side, an elevated cancer risk.
