The axolotl is a fully aquatic salamander — a neotenic amphibian that keeps its feathery external gills for life — and it is fascinating and gentle, but its needs are precise and non-negotiable. Above all it needs cold, clean water: 16–18°C, never tropical warmth, so most homes need no heater and some need a chiller in summer, because warm water is a leading cause of stress, illness and death. Axolotls must be kept alone. They are cannibalistic and will nip gills and limbs of tankmates, and even fish can bite or stress them. The tank floor should be bare or covered in fine sand — never gravel, which they swallow and which causes fatal impaction — and filtration should be gentle, as they dislike strong current. Water quality is everything: they are extremely sensitive to ammonia and poor conditions, which cause gill damage, stress and fungal infections. They should not be handled, as they have soft, boneless bodies and delicate skin. Feed appropriate worms and pellets, keep the water cold, clean and low-flow, and an axolotl — able to regrow lost limbs and gills — will thrive for ten to fifteen years.
