Blood pythons come from the swamps, marshes, and plantations of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, where their squat, powerful build suits an ambush lifestyle. They are short for their bulk, usually 1.2 to 1.8 meters but weighing 3 to 9 kilograms, and live 15 to 25 years. Captive-bred individuals have shed the wild-caught reputation for aggression and are now placid, if occasionally moody around shed time. House an adult in a secure enclosure of at least 190 liters with a large water dish. These humidity-loving snakes need 60-70% humidity and good ventilation to avoid scale rot, with a warm side around 30-31C and a cool end in the mid 20s. Feed frozen-thawed rodents every one to two weeks, avoiding obesity in this heavy-bodied species. Move slowly and support their considerable weight when handling; they dislike being startled but tolerate calm interaction well.
