The Babydoll Southdown descends from the old-style Southdown sheep of England's Sussex Downs, later miniaturized and preserved in the United States. Standing only 46-61 cm tall and weighing 27-79 kg, these gentle sheep can live 10-16 years and are often used as natural, low-impact grazers in vineyards and orchards. Babydolls are docile and easy to manage but still need a secure paddock with fencing to keep predators out. Keep them in a flock of at least two or three, as sheep are strongly gregarious. Provide shade, a simple three-sided shelter, and good-quality pasture or grass hay; avoid copper-containing goat minerals, which are toxic to sheep. Their woolly fleece requires annual shearing, and routine hoof trimming, deworming, and monitoring for foot rot and parasites are essential in damp climates.
