The Belgian is arguably the most powerful of all draft breeds, built broad and immensely strong and historically holding pulling records that dwarf other horses. Most modern American Belgians wear a distinctive sorrel (chestnut) coat with a flaxen mane and tail. Behind the muscle is one of the most docile, patient and friendly temperaments in the horse world. Willing and unflappable, Belgians are relatively easy to handle and train for their size, working in harness, on farms and increasingly as gentle riding and therapy horses. They still need the space, sturdy facilities, turnout and substantial (but carefully managed) feeding that any horse of their bulk demands. Mostly clean-legged, they are simpler to groom than feathered drafts, but they carry a couple of breed-linked concerns: they are among the breeds prone to junctional epidermolysis bullosa (a fatal foal skin condition — a reason to use tested breeders) and to chronic progressive lymphedema in any feathering. As heavy, efficient keepers they need vigilant weight, laminitis, hoof and arthritis management, and their working lifespan tends to be a little shorter than lighter breeds'.
