Hailing from the tropical forests and savannas of South America, the Blue-and-Gold Macaw is a giant parrot weighing up to 1.3 kilograms with a wingspan over a metre and a lifespan of 50-70 years. These are enormously social, affectionate birds that bond powerfully with their people and demand a great deal of attention and space. Housing requires an oversized, heavy-gauge cage or ideally a dedicated aviary, since these powerful chewers destroy flimsy enclosures and toys. Feed formulated pellets alongside nuts, fresh vegetables, and fruit, being mindful of fat-rich seeds that lead to obesity. Their calls are extremely loud and carry for long distances, making them unsuitable for apartments or noise-sensitive homes. Provide daily out-of-cage time, robust chewing material, and consistent training to channel their intelligence and prevent screaming or plucking.
